Poly Sea is a character design project developed through printmaking that speculates on the future of marine life in a plastic-filled ocean. Inspired by projections that plastic waste entering the oceans could nearly triple by 2040, the project imagines a hybrid creature born from pollution and adaptation.
Combining the form of a seahorse with a discarded plastic bottle, the character draws from the seahorse's unique mating ritual, reimagining a future where a plastic bottle is mistaken for a mate. The resulting offspring, Poly Sea, becomes a metaphor for the irreversible relationship between marine life and plastic pollution.
